Ranger’s navigation suite has been seriously upgraded since we purchased her. Starting with the basics, there are three GPS sources. The primary Furuno 330B feeds the NMEA 2000 buss for all receiving devices. The Furuno TZ Touch 3 has a built in GPS receiver and finally, the AirMar 220 has a GPS receiver along with the weather functions. They are easily selectable and I have heard, haven’t tried, that one can hot fail into another should the currently receiving GPS become inoperative. Hasn’t happened.
Ranger has two Furuno TZ Touch 3 systems integrated with the Simrad autopilot. We keep spares for the autopilot including the reversing pump and tiller angle sensor arm. Two VHF radios round out the wheelhouse. When we are offshore, we drop in a way point and use the Nav feature to go directly to the waypoint. We are almost always within 60 feet of the rumb line.
We like staying in touch with weather and the Iridium Go with the Predict Wind weather app is fantastic. With StarLink we can also feed realtime weather TV stations.
While mentioning StarLink, which we truly love, our dependance on marina WiFi and tethered devices has vanished. We get amazing broadband speeds and stream all video news and entertainment. Add your Apple TV (or similar service) and you will never go back to WiFi.
Having said that, and should StarLink fall out of the sky, we added several years ago the Aigean wifi booster. It really helped and works especially well with OnSpot WiFi.
